My forever jam is eclectic and bohemian interiors that have a lived-in feel. However, when designing a new space, I have a set of fixed design principles I use as my framework to hang from it my creativity. These guiding rules makes it all work whilst still allowing for that relaxed, ‘just thrown together’ vibe.

  1. Balancing the scheme

The queen of pattern layering Rita Konig

This is a broad simple rule but one I use in every room is to mix fabric patterns, textures and weights. For example I will use a larger statement pattern, a small repeat pattern (these are always useful), a plain and a stripe. I will make sure there’s a mix of textures as well - using maybe a velvet, a woven, a printed cotton and a linen (this is so important, I’d hate to end up with all velvets or all linens). You want the result to be effortless and layered and feeling like it’s always been there.

The best way to begin is to find a fabric you totally love and if not fabric a piece of art or a rug. It’s this one fixed thing that all the other fabrics pivot off and sets the tone and mood of the space.

Get all your samples together and really consider how they sit together. Do you love them all, do they connect and talk to each other, are two too similar?

But to counter balance that….

  1. Incorporating Unexpected Elements

Kitchen Ideas.
How boring if this was a classic kitchen floor, the unexpected red is genius.
